The world of paint protection film is evolving fast. For years, traditional wet install PPF has been the standard for protecting vehicles while maintaining a clean, factory-like finish. But recently, dry apply color PPF has entered the scene and changed the conversation entirely.
To really compare the two methods, we wrapped the hood of a Tesla Model Y Juniper using both techniques at the same time. One side used traditional wet install color PPF, while the other used the newer dry apply color PPF. The goal was simple: compare the installation process, speed, learning curve, and overall experience side by side.
What Is Wet Install PPF?
Traditional wet install PPF uses a slip solution, typically a mix of water and soap, sprayed underneath and on top of the film during installation. This allows the installer to slide and reposition the film before locking it into place with a squeegee.
This method has been the industry standard for years because it gives installers flexibility during placement. Since the film can move around before tack is applied, it is often considered more forgiving for complex panels and precise alignment.
Wet install color PPF is also what most experienced PPF installers are already comfortable with.

What Is Dry Apply Color PPF?
Dry apply color PPF is a newer category of polyurethane film that installs much closer to vinyl wrap than traditional PPF. Instead of spraying solution underneath the film, the adhesive is applied directly to the panel dry, while lubricant is only used on the top surface to help the squeegee glide smoothly.
Brands like Avery Dennison with Prisma Pro and 3M with PWF are helping push this technology into the mainstream.
Unlike wet install PPF, dry apply films are often bulk installed similarly to vinyl wraps, although in this experiment we intentionally used identical precut patterns on both sides of the hood to keep the comparison fair.

Which Method Is Faster?
When it comes to pure installation speed, dry apply color PPF has a noticeable advantage.
One of the biggest time savings comes from the edges. With dry apply film, the edges can often be wrapped almost immediately after installation because the adhesive grabs quickly.
Wet install PPF, on the other hand, requires more time for the water to evaporate before the edges fully seal. If rushed, trapped moisture can cause lifting or bubbling later on.
That said, speed depends heavily on the installer’s background.

During the comparison, the dry apply method behaved much more like a controlled vinyl install, while wet install required smaller, more deliberate “PPF-style” strokes focused on managing water movement underneath the film.
Which Is Easier for Beginners?
This depends entirely on your experience.
If you already install vinyl wraps, dry apply color PPF will probably feel far more natural. The workflow, panel handling, and edge wrapping process are similar to what vinyl installers are already used to.
However, if you come from traditional PPF, wet install will likely feel more intuitive because of the repositionability and familiar fluid movement underneath the film.
Neither method is objectively “better.” They are simply different tools designed around different workflows and installer preferences.

The debate between dry vs wet PPF installation should not be about which one is universally better. It should be about which process fits your background, workflow, and comfort level.
Dry apply color PPF is exciting because it bridges the gap between vinyl wrapping and paint protection. It offers faster installs, quicker edge finishing, and a workflow many vinyl installers will immediately understand.
Wet install color PPF remains incredibly effective and gives installers more repositioning flexibility and familiarity, especially for those already experienced in traditional clear paint protection film.
At the end of the day, both methods offer excellent protection, similar thickness, and comparable warranties.
As more manufacturers continue developing dry apply color PPF technology, we’ll likely see both methods coexist depending on the installer and the project.
